Dreaming of Spring

pansy mainIt's winter in Cincinnati, but we are already dreaming of spring at Diefenbachers. We have already started growing the early spring crops that will be blooming in homes and yards by March, April and May. We have planted many of  the popular favorites that anchor the garden

Here is a list of plants that you can use to start planning that early spring color. Most of these plants will be available for you to purchase before or just as the leaves come out on the trees.

PANSIES
Big, cheery faces in a wide range of colors, sizes and types. No other plant greets the start of spring with so much enthusiasm, and we have planted them in lots of different sizes - the flats that fill out a big space, the bowls for the patios and decks and the market baskets for quick color here and there.

Our Easter Lilies and bigger and stronger because we begin with premium bullbs - double and triple noses, heavy in the hand, and firm to the touch. And then we double and triple plant these premium bulbs nice and tight to get a big, bushy, extra-tall presentation of trumpets on Easter Sunday.

HYACINTHS, DAFFODILS, TULIPS AND SNAPDRAGONS
Strong, cheerful color that stands high above the other plants in the early spring garden. Tulips are very popular, especially the red ones, with blue hyacinths, yellow daffodils and multi-color snapdragon dressing up the garden. We always have a big mix of colors to offer in several different sizes.

Violas, Dianthus and Hellebores add accents to the early spring garden. They are charming ornamental plants for the table that also return with even more charm when planted in the garden afterwards.

SPRING AZALEAS AND HYDRANGEAS
For holiday gifts or just as a nice table decoration for the spring holidays, use Azaleas and Hydrangeas to bring the garden indoors. They add a nice splash of color by the door as you come in, or to greet you on a table when you enter a room.

Spring can't come soon enough for us, but we know that we can enjoy fresh, living color in our homes earlier than usual when we look for these easy, cheerful colors to get us out of our cabin fever mood.
