Vincas are better known as periwinkles, those pastel flowers that lightly dot low growing, almost shrub-like leaves. Vincas sport long, slender stems that can reach out from the crown and cover a good amount of garden space, making them the ideal solution when you want some color and coverage where the ground is rough-and-tumble. For example, plant some among the rocks or along a fence, or any spot where the ground is uneven—Vincas will ramble around, through and in-between everything.
Think of them as lightweight groundcovers. Vincas are not climbers, so don’t expect them to crawl up a deck post; they will crawl around the concrete footing, however, and cover it up really well. You’ll find that Vincas grow pretty low—maybe up to your shin at best.
Vincas are actually shade plants, but they tolerate the dry heat found under decks, in the rain shadows of a porch, or underneath the canopy of a tree. Their color doesn't melt in the hot, sticky summer, but that doesn't mean you can subject them to 8 hours of sun and expect them to thrive. They are better placed where heat and shadows cause problems, because their signature feature is hot, steamy shade performance.
Vincas are native to northwest Africa, southern Europe and southwest Asia. If you think about it, even hot locations have shady spots, and that is where you’ll find Vincas growing naturally. In some places, Vincas are planted as fire-retardant groundcovers. Now that's drought resistance!
Flower performance remains steady throughout the summer. While impatiens provide a carpet of color, Vincas offer a rich, glossy green blanket of leaves embellished with charming pastel polka dots.
Pink is the traditional Vinca color, but they also come in Burgundies, Lavenders, Whites, and some bi-colors with light-colored eyes.
